18th Street Loft
In San Francisco’s Mission District, an industrial loft in a former See’s candy factory becomes a polished, warm retreat.
In the living space, light washes in from a sweeping wall of iron-framed windows, catching in the rush finish of the board-formed concrete ceiling overhead. Underfoot, the existing concrete floor, finished with Microtopping®, serves as a visual and textural counterweight to the ceiling. In the kitchen, smooth, just off-white surfaces cut a line against the concrete, but not too starkly. Horizontal bands of blonde wood stretch behind the kitchen counter and echo two long, open shelves on the adjust wall.
Passive strategies, like an internal transom with fans, keep the space cool and comfortable while maintaining a modest environmental footprint, and create opportunities for spatial definition. The space is layered onto the quintessential San Francisco that pulses in the bones of the building.
