Integral Design
In· te· gral
adj.
1. Essential or necessary for completeness; constituent:
2. Possessing everything essential; entire.
Integral Design is a permeable practice that embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to both the design and building processes. Together, they embody the Integral perspective as a whole. From the genesis of a mission statement, it is a celebration of the collaborative mindset. Through this wide lens, the transition from the concept to the tangible becomes seamless on all levels. An integral approach to design transcends the traditional, modern, and post-modern frameworks, yet includes the enduring truths in each. It is an unfolding organic aesthetic that allows the emergence of a new consciousness.
Architecture and Psychology
Both Kevin Hackett and Dr. JJ Kelly have recently given a series of lectures entitled 'Building Consciousness'. The lectures are an in-depth exploration into the merging disciplines of Architecture and Psychology, both in the professional and academic realms. The series is also a thorough investigation into the 20th century evolution of both professions. They have demonstrated that the paths of these formed and formless traditions have been inextricably bound through time. They postulate that through an intentional cross-pollination of these endeavors, a new integrative paradigm can emerge. Here at Siol, we have begun to implement such concepts into the design process. Their work have been presented both at the Berkeley Therapy Institute and at the Siol Salon in San Francisco.
